Education

I am currently working as a research fellow at Deakin University and hope to commence a PhD candidature in mid-2020. I completed a Master of Biomedical Science with first class honours from the University of Melbourne. During my masters, I completed my research thesis in vision science and eye movements. I have also completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in neuroscience, from the University of Melbourne.

Experience

I have 8 years tutoring experience with students aged 10-16 years of age. I spend most of my time tutoring students maths however am capable and have spent the last year doing Science as well. Maths and science often present abstract problems that are not found in other subjects. Abstract problems need abstract problem solving skills which is often hard to develop in a class situation. I work with my students to give them the tools to solve problems themselves, build resilience and persistence when it comes to tricky questions and increase their in-class confidence. For a subject like mathematics it is easy for a student to become confused in class, and consequently fall behind. I like to spend a few minutes at the start of each session, working with the student to set up a plan, to ensure that we are going over the topics they need to learn, as well as revisiting any issues they may still be having. I work best with students who are struggling and need help catching up, with an average result increase from 40% to 70% for my students. I want all my students to feel confident in their work and I love to help them achieve their goals.

Hobbies

I am very passionate about science and really enjoy partaking in research. Outside of university life I enjoy partaking in numerous activities. In 2017 I joined an Australian rules football club as a part of their inaugural womens team. I absolutely loved picking up a new sport and being surrounded by girls who were also keen to give things a go. I am the opposite of a natural athlete, however have become quite successful through hard work and training, even being selected as the Vice Captain for the 2017 and 2019 seasons I feel having this experience with footy helps me understand kids who maths doesnt come naturally to, just as footy didn't come naturally to me. I hope to inspire them and with some hard work, increase their confidence in the academic realm.
